Fishin'

I'm not much of a fisherwoman. Haven't been too many times. So, it was with some surprise that I found out today that fishing involves lying in many forms. For example, one hears the stories of fisherman who lie about how big the one that got away was. Or how their pole really got broken. Or telling the game warden they didn't know five was the limit. Today I also found out "fishing for an hour" is another big lie. Because, frankly, an hour is just not long enough to stare at your pole in the water. Apparently it takes four hours! That's how long it took us to catch our fish today. Harrison caught his first limit - five fish! I caught two fish, and that's sayin' something because I have never caught a fish (save for a large catfish I once caught between my bare hands reaching off the dock - no lie!). I also learned that other fishing buddies on the dock are more than helpful, even sharing their bait and tackle with you! One such buddy introduced Harrison to his special homemade "trout scent" which he guaranteed would catch fish. Well, it convinced Harrison so much he shouted it to the masses "it was the stink! I know it was!" Jeff said perhaps he should have a big ole helping of humble pie. But how can you NOT get excited when that clear, slack line actually produces something other than seaweed (or "salad" as Arlie likes to call it - she caught a whole Ceasar today!)? Watching those flopping, shiny, irridescent rainbow trout just a flappin' on their lines, mouths agape..........what a sight! We even discovered (gasp!) that some people don't even WANT the fish they've caught and were gifted two fish by one gentleman and EIGHT fish by a father/son duo (they were going to use them as crab bait!). We snatched them up and brought home a total of 18 fish for the smoker. Now, we just have to see how they taste. Like victory, I'm guessing!

Experienced fishermen realize that the best fish are the ones you don't have to clean. That is how catch and release was invented. My students still have a lot more learnin:)
