New Moon

Ok, I know I will offend all you die-hard Twilight fans out there, but I just finished my "sentence" of reading New Moon and that was hands-down the worst book I've ever read! Stephenie Meyer is a CRAPPY writer. Her writing lacks depth, she uses trite metaphors and Bella's utterly undying love for Edward is just cheesy and unbelievable. I give this one NO stars and a big, fat BLAH! Not to mention she uses up 500 pages to tell you what could have been told in 200 (but fills the space with lots of junior high-esque descriptions of Bella's "hole" and how she "can't breathe" and all her clairvoyant thoughts). Just bad, bad writing. I do not understand the hype over this whole Twilight series, and I'm afraid I can't waste another precious minute of my already insufficient reading time slogging through the rest of the books. Similar to the Harry Potter hysteria, I only read the first two books, didn't get the hype and didn't waste my time reading the others. I think Meyer was just damn lucky. Must have been a LOT of bored teenagers out there when she hit a chord with her vampire love story and she's having her 15 minutes of fame. But it saddens me that our young people are delving into this substandard "literature". Hopefully they will still find time to read some of the great books and this whole Twilight fad will die down. I'm glad to see them read, but this stuff is really crap.

On another note, I am only up to ten books so far this year! I am definitely spending too much time on the icky stuff. Our book club chose to read classics this year and some of them have been duds. I'm sorry to say (or not!) that I did not read "Tale of Two Cities" for this week's book club (using the excuse that Arlie has a musical that night and I would not be able to attend the discussion). Hayley is currently reading it for English class and hates it. I've actually never read it but have no desire to. I'm on to another book, hopefully a little bit mindless to entertain my mind after being catatonic during "New Moon"!!!
